At close to 0:00 on the morning of December 18th, 2017, the Poly Group’s auction site at Beijing Four Seasons Hotel was still crowded with people and the heat remained unresolved. For a couple of years, “The only legend left in the arena” was the Qing Dynasty Emperor Kangxi’s Huang Huali’s Huangfeng Pear Peony Pattern Top. The cabinets, after fierce competition on and off the court, eventually sold at a high price of 86 million yuan, plus the final transaction price of commissions was 98.9 million yuan, refreshing the highest record of Chinese classical furniture!

The previous price of the big four cabinets was estimated to be inquired. The scene started from 42 million. It was immediately called 52 million, 58 million, and quickly rushed to 75 million, 78 million, 79 million, 80 million!

After breaking through 80 million, the asking price slowed down, and the auctioneer's “re-consider” was gradually increasing to 84 million, 85 million, 85.5 million, and it was 85.8 million years of stagnation. Finally, the back field buyer shouted: 86 million, full applause from the audience, desperate deal!

Inheritance and Order of the Old House of Clear Water Mountain House

This is a four-piece cabinet of Huanghua pear that attracts people's attention regardless of scale, subject matter, and materials. It is a collection of Hong Kong's famous director Li Hanxiang.

Lee Han-hsiang (1962-1996), a well-known Hong Kong director, stands behind the top cabinet. Chinese classical furniture is part of Mr. Li’s numerous collections.

Li Hanxiang has been obsessed with collections since his work in Beijing in 1982. Since his work, he has been obsessed with collections. With his abundant funds and congenital artistic intuitions, “Qingshui Shanfang” (Li Hanxiang's collection hall) has been a pseudo-faithfulness for several years, becoming one of the collections of the 1980s and 1990s. The leader. Chinese classical furniture is the quintessence of many of its collections. Its collection is mostly from Beijing Hardwood Furniture Factory (now Long Shuncheng) , and several of them are recorded in Mr. Wang Shizhen’s “Review of Ming-style Furniture” and “Ming-style Furniture Research”. "in.

Originally this piece was bought by an old treasurer with 50 gold bars before the joint venture of Beijing Hardwood Furniture Factory. He bought the four large-scale cabinets of Huanghua pear, which was regarded as the treasure of the town shop, and was recommended by Mr. Zhang Dexiang, a furniture expert from Ming and Qing Dynasties, to be Mr. Wang Shizhen. Selected to be included in the "Reminiscences of Ming-style furniture", but due to the shooting environment and other conditions have not yet been. This was followed by Mr. Zhang Dexiang's recommendation and was purchased by Li Hanxiang.

In 1995, Li Hanxiang's "Clear Water Mountain House" Ming and Qing furniture collection was the first appearance of Chinese furniture in the domestic auction, and was also the first private collection in China.

On October 9, 1995, to raise funds for the construction of the film and television base, Li Hanxiang sent 28 pieces of his collection to Jiade auction. In this country's first furniture auction, the four counters were the final axles and the only furniture in the field that was valued at over a million.

Either this kind of valuation is too expensive, or the collector’s awareness is not enough, the auction does not have a deal and it is “changeable”. This handle was hidden in the hands of the private collector for 22 years.

Kangxi Royal Palace furniture typical

The large four-piece cabinet of Huanghua pear is a typical device used in the furniture of Kangxi Imperial Palace. The most notable feature is its huge size, superb carving and top-quality material for pears.

Presumably its use is for the imperial gardens of the Forbidden City harem or the Yuanmingyuan, the Summer Palace, etc. It may be located in the residence of Houyi, and it is not even ruled out as a wedding dress or empress.

The selection of huanghuali used in this cabinet is very precise. The door panels and other places are mostly open. The grain and color are basically the same. For a long time in the north, the color is like steamed chestnut, and the quality is amber, which is pleasant and pleasant.

The cabinets are huge in size and have a very good ratio. They are shocking and close-looking. The scale relationship is very regular. The width is half of the height, and the width is half of the width. The two cabinets are squared together and the rigorousness of the rules.

The large-scale scale of the cabinet forms a large stage. The lake's stone oysters, peony hairpins, and phoenix phoenixes travel through and fly. It seems that they can hear the whispering of the green crow, can smell the wings of a flying phoenix, and are like a human landscape.

There are 20 phoenix phoenixes on the large cabinet, and the patterns and layout are very elegant. Yu Feng summoned each other and fluttered under the peony, which was a traditional "Phoen peony."

The top box's phoenixes are hovering into a rotating "o" shape. The bottom cabinet's phoenix phoenixes are actually diagonally opposite, forming an "X" shape. The stifling board is an inward one, and the tooth plate is outward. "This kind of composition processing is quite ingenious.

The phoenix pattern was a symbol of Houyi during the Ming and Qing Dynasties. It was absolutely not privately used. This phoenix pattern feature and dynamics on the large cabinet are very popular styles in early Qing Dynasty, especially during the Kangxi period.

The phoenix features on the large cabinet: flat head, slightly young chicken, long feathered crown behind the head, rolled up and end up. He is bent and slightly open, almost parrot. There are glossy ganoderma lucidum-shaped crowns on the pipa, and the yin line is on the side. Typical Danfeng eyes, slender, lying silkworm under the eyes. Dan Fengyan's portraying is extremely exciting. It is performed on the raised phoenix by means of line engravement. The knife is smooth and smooth, and the long-headed state of Wei Feng is reflected most vividly. There are obvious ears at the junction of the head and the neck. Yong Feng is a long-necked crane, with hair on the neck blowing up in thorns. The tails on the body, wings, legs and tails are close to the crane. The tail wing is a typical peacock tail type, which is a common style since the late Ming Dynasty.

Flying above, five long tail feathers are phoenixes. The wings of the phoenix bird stretch and the ribbon-like fins open. If the pulsating rhythm moves, people will grab the eyes of people within dozens of meters. It seems that they can hear the voice of the wings and are very decorative. The head, body, wings, and tail of the phoenix show the appearance of a group, and it is close to the group phoenix.

Standing on the stone, it is full of imposing vigor. The ostrich on the Taihu Lake raised its head high and the head and body were all oriented diagonally upwards. The legs were in the wrong position. A wing showed some help. The rear wing naturally flies backwards, emphasizing the body's momentum.

Bored on the warehouse board is a double ridge pattern, which flies relatively. There is a moire-like crown under the jaw, which is slightly different from the ridge pattern on the cabinet door. The layout of the top box pattern is similar to that of the base cabinet, and the details have changed. The phoenix and phoenix hover around and look back at each other.

The phoenix phoenixes are adorned with Lianyungang. The sculpting method using flat-bottomed slopes is emphasized. There are stunners under the cabinets, and sulky sculpted eagles are flying in pairs. The four-cornered moire pattern in the middle of the Ming Dynasty occupies the style of the Ming Dynasty and is surrounded by moire patterns.

The dental plate is of the slamming type, with turns and small teeth, for the common tooth plate style in the early Qing Dynasty. The edge of the dental plate is a yang line, and after entangling in the middle, it evolves into a winding lotus pattern, which is a typical style of the Kangxi period.

The cabinet side board adopts the practice of falling from the drum. The back panel is framed by another opener and fixed on the frame by a pin. The so-called live split type is called "live and take".

The top edge of the vertical cabinet rises from the edge line, and the top box is connected like a mother-daughter's mouth and is stable.

Rare examples of the world

This is a rare four-piece counter, regardless of the subject matter or scale.

As far as the theme is concerned, the phoenix-themed huanghuali or rosewood top cabinets, including the furniture of the Qing dynasty, are currently known. In the archives, there are also rare records related to rosewood cabinets.

Huge top cabinets are made from good Hainan pears. If the price is based on the price of items and materials during the period of the Kangxi period, the cost will be more than 500 two silver coins. It takes more than a year and a half.

In terms of scale, the Huanghuali top cabinet is not common among the Qing’s oldest furniture. In addition to the four large cabinets, the medium- and large-scale top cabinets that were kept in the Forbidden City are currently known only in four pairs: the huanghuali Baibao inlay Gongtu top cabinet, the Shoukang Palace and the Yangxin Hall A pair of huanghuali Yunlong top cabinets and a pear blossoming black Yunlong top cabinet at Kunming Palace.

Pyramid Baibao Integral Gongtu Top Cabinet (National Palace Museum Collection)

The Pyramid Baibao intrinsic Gongtu top cabinet is 278.5 cm in height, 167.3 cm in width, and 72 cm in thickness. The fir is used as a child and is made of yellow pears. Similar situations can be found in the collection of a pair of yellow pears at the Metropolitan Museum. Intarsia diagram top cabinet. The pattern and styling style of the two pairs of cabinets all have typical early Qing characteristics.

Shoukang Palace Ancestral Hall features a pear-shaped dragon top cabinet, which is 290 centimeters high and 176 centimeters wide. The heart of the cupboard is carved and full of pears. There is a pair of cabinets on the west side of the Hall of Yang Xin Dianxi. In the middle of the room, there are red sandalwood railings, and the lower part is connected to the dwarf cabinets to form an integrated effect. The color of the cabinet is nearly black, but it is made by Huanghuali, modeling, proportion, Decorations, carvings, etc. are exactly the same as those displayed by the Shookang Palace.

The Kuning Palace Museum's pear blossoming black Yunlong top cabinet is 518 cm high, 193 cm wide and 80.5 cm thick.

Beijing Poly's 2013 Rosewood Passionflower Dragon Cloud Top Cabinet

Among the public and private collections outside the Forbidden City, the height of hardwood top bins currently known is more than 3 meters. There are huanghuali Yunlong pattern top bins produced by Beijing Bohai in 2004 (320 cm high, 190 cm wide and 75 meters high. Centimeter) , and the Rosewood Passiflora Yunlong Ceiling Cabinet produced by Beijing Poly in 2013 (325 cm high and 174 cm wide) . In addition, no other cases have been found.

The Shanghai Museum collects purple sandalwood Yunlong pattern top bins, and the existing cabinets are 222cm high, 159cm wide and 78cm thick, according to the museum's introduction. The cabinets of the Huanghuali, Fenghuang and Peony lines are 220cm high and 156.5cm wide. 77.5cm thick, if you take into account the measurement of inaccurate and top-bottom cabinet for centuries due to the size change caused by trimming, the original size of the two should be the same.

It is particularly worth mentioning that there is a pair of purple dragon wood dragon “square corner cabinet” from the Shanghai Museum, which is presumed to be a pair of top bins. The widths and proportions of the outer frames, door frames, and even horizontal bars of all parts of the room are the same as those of the Huanghua Pear four-piece counters. The doors and doors are decorated with reliefs. The dragon or phoenix arrangement and even the moire patterns are all nearby. The size of its existing base cabinets is almost the same as that of Huang Huali’s four-piece cabinets. If one considers the inaccuracy of measurement and the dimensional change caused by trimming of the top cabinet for hundreds of years, the original dimensions of both should be the same, experts speculate. Even if the two are not the same batch of production for the designer, but also one pair is made with reference to the other pair.

5'22'' Take a different perspective and enjoy the four large cabinets of Huanghua pear.

“Pearl four large cabinets, which are pairs of top cabinets, are more than simple, less carved; more than two meters tall, more than three meters is rare. This pair of Huanghua pear phoenix four cabinet The eagle's liveliness, the layout of the pattern is also good, there are tactics, there is painting. Phoenix wear peony, the subject is also very pleasing, implied auspicious, not tacky. It should be the things in the palace, after the paraphernalia. Cabinet large volume, next to the station It's very shocking, but it's not stupid at a bit, and it's good for proportioning. Generally, there is a lot more at the top of the roof. This top box is thin and tall, so the whole thing looks tall and light. It's also good to save the state. The plates are huanghuali, the red material, shiny and shiny, clean and clean, at a glance, we know that we cherish it very much, rub it off frequently, and keep the leather case out.”

- Ming and Qing furniture experts Zhang Dexiang

"The four large top cabinets are the kings of the cabinets, no matter what material, such as beech wood, nanmu, lacquer, red sandalwood, huanghuali, mahogany, etc., can show its dignified and majestic momentum. And Huanghuali phoenix peony pattern In addition to the four large top cabinets, it also contains the beauty of the show. Large furniture needs to match the spacious room... The four cabinets of the Huanghuali peony peony pattern are also Qing Dynasty's three generations of works, their styles, crafts, materials, The decoration is a first-class, with a huge style and well-proportioned proportions, with a slender and delicate frame, and a dark cymbal structure that is quite exquisite; the yellow pear material is even and beautiful, and the phoenix peony embossment is ostentatious but not exaggerated. The phoenix pattern is rare. The four-piece cabinet of the Huanghuali phoenix peony pattern is likely to be related to the queen or the royal family. Even without regard to its user grade, it is one of the four most beautiful examples of top cabinets."

- Director of the former California Classical Furniture Museum

Ke Kesi

“Phoenix carvings are all gorgeous and exquisite, and are not the hands of ordinary people. It can be seen that the owner is not rich and expensive. This is the only Huanghuali top cabinet, and it is the only yellow pear top decorated with a phoenix pattern. The bins, which can be called orphans, are not only distinguished by their size, the fineness of their choice of materials, but also by the strictness of their workmanship and the beauty of their carvings, which all show their noble descent and are most likely to come from the Qing Palace Office.
