Reporter Yulin Lin has been controversial since Beijing's genetically modified foods. Some experts believe that genetically modified foods may have potential long-term health effects, and some experts oppose it. On April 20th, Shi Yanquan, deputy director of the Department of Science and Education of the Ministry of Agriculture, answered questions concerning the regulation of genetically modified foods in China and the safety of genetically modified foods. 1. What are the genetically modified foods currently approved in China? There are two cases of genetically modified products approved by China: One is the use of genetically modified food crops for commercial production. So far, it has approved three types of antiviral sweet peppers, storage-tolerant tomatoes and anti-virus papayas. Currently there are anti-virus papayas, bell peppers and tomatoes that are no longer produced due to market development and changes in demand. In 2009, the safety certificates for transgenic insect-resistant rice and transgenic phytase corn were also approved. However, these two types require the approval of varieties and production licenses before they can be commercialized. At present, there is no commercial production of transgenic insect-resistant rice and transgenic phytase corn. The other is the import of genetically modified agricultural products used for processing raw materials in China, including soybeans, corn, rapeseed, etc. At present, China has issued five imported genetically modified soybean varieties and 13 genetically modified maize varieties. The import safety certificate, approved applications and imported genetically modified organisms are all After strict environmental safety and food safety evaluation. Safety assessments indicate that these approved and imported GMOs and non-GMOs have the same safety and can be eaten with confidence. 2. How do you view the safety of GM foods? GM is the focus of everyone's attention. We cannot simply say that genetic safety is not safe. GM is a technology and it is neutral. It depends on whether the application of this technology is good or bad. In 2003, the Codex Alimentarius Commission (CAC) passed the standard document “Safety Assessment Guide for Recombinant DNA Plants and Food Safety†on the safety testing of transgenic plants. At present, this guideline has become an international standard and internationally it follows this guideline to evaluate the safety of foods for genetically modified foods. Prior to entering the market, genetically modified foods have undergone rigorous safety evaluation. They are more comprehensive and stricter than any previous food safety assessment, including environmental safety assessments, toxic safety assessments, and sensitization safety assessments. No GM foods that have been approved for listing have any adverse effects on human health. "It should be said that the genetically modified food that we can buy should be safe and safe to eat." 3. What is the significance of developing GM technology? The reason why China has to develop GM technology can be summed up in two points: First, China's national conditions are decided. China's agricultural production is confronted with increasing pressures such as population increase, shortage of resources, environmental deterioration, and abnormal climate. We must continue to increase the ability to guarantee the supply of agricultural products, ensure the self-sufficiency rate of food by 95%, increase the income of farmers, and constantly raise people’s living standards. In order to fundamentally improve the ecological environment of the farmland, we must accelerate the development of biotechnology and achieve the close integration of transgenic technology with conventional technologies. Second, deal with opportunities and challenges. From a global perspective, the development of genetically modified technology has entered a period of strategic opportunities. Those who seize the opportunity will be able to seize the highest point of technology and market development opportunities. Those who cannot grasp will fall behind and be controlled by people. In recent years, China's agricultural products have already faced greater and greater pressure from the international market competition, which further enhances the sense of urgency for the development of biotechnology in China. In short, the judgment on the development of genetically modified technology should be scientific and rational. We must grasp the basic national conditions that China is still a developing country and a big agricultural country. We must take into account the sustainable development of agriculture and the interests and aspirations of the public, including the majority of farmers. It is necessary to examine and balance the international political economy and science and technology in the context of competition. We must unify and coordinate the basic principles of national food security and scientific and technological innovation and the basic approach of changing the mode of economic development.
