Recently, scientists from the Institute of Future Industrial Research (FII) at the University of South Australia have developed a polymer thin film coating that can conduct electricity on contact lenses, making it possible to create microcircuits. The researchers pointed out that the manufacture of this conductive coated hydrogel is of great significance for future wearable electronic devices. The paper published in the recently published American Journal of Chemical Society, Applied Materials and Interfaces, states that they deposited conductive polymer PEDOT (poly 3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) on a hydrated gel matrix by vapor deposition and Mixed with biocompatible ingredients. The dehydrated gel matrix was subjected to plasma pretreatment to change the surface shape and chemical composition to promote the adhesion of the conductive PEDOT surface layer. Controlling the gas-phase polymerization process and composition, the PEDOT-based coating becomes both biocompatible and highly conductive. Drew Evans, an associate professor at the institute, said that this is a technology that can "change the rules of the game." It is expected to bring about a safe way to integrate people with smart devices. For example, the data or images from the blood glucose meter are displayed directly on the contact lens through the real electronic display screen, unlike the glasses that need to be viewed through projection. At present, researchers have completed the proof of concept and cooperated with a British world-renowned company that develops contact lenses. Evans said they proved that these materials work together, and the next stage is to make them stick together. After this step, the next step is to expand the scale of production and develop commercial products with the British team. This film coating can also be used in other areas, including all-plastic automotive mirrors, electrochromic windows, smart windows, and more. The windows will darken as soon as the switch is pressed lightly, and then they will return to transparency once they are pressed, which will control the amount of light entering and exiting.
