Organic solar cells have the advantages of diversity in chemical structure, lightweight and portable, and can realize large-area flexible devices. It is one of the most dynamic and vital frontier topics in the current research field of solar cells. Inverted devices use ITO as the cathode and high-work-function metals as the anode, which can significantly improve the device's stability. However, due to the mismatch of the ITO and the acceptor (PCBM) energy levels, it is usually necessary to insert an interfacial layer between the ITO and the active layer to form an ohmic contact at the interface to improve the extraction and collection capabilities of the electrons.

Alcohol-soluble organic molecules as cathode interface materials can reduce the work function of ITO and improve the efficiency of photovoltaic devices; and these materials have good solubility and can be processed into films. The research team of Fang Junfeng of the Ningbo Institute of Materials Technology and Engineering, Chinese Academy of Sciences, obtained an organic solar cell device with an energy conversion efficiency of 9.2% through the regulation of conjugated units of alcohol-soluble conjugated small molecules. This result has reached the highest level in the world.

It has been found that alcohol-soluble small molecules with larger conjugation systems can result in a more hydrophobic cathode interface layer, thereby improving the active layer morphology, increasing the short-circuit current Jsc and filling factor FF of the device, and obtaining high-efficiency devices. As a result, new design ideas have been provided for the development of new high-efficiency organic interface materials. The relevant results were published in Adv. Energy Mater. (10.1002/aenm.201400359) and applied for a Chinese patent (201310264027.7).

In addition, the research group has also developed other organic and inorganic interface materials and achieved good results. They were published in ACS Appl. Mater.
