Recycling plastics made of candy-colored furniture set off a new trend in the industry
Environmental protection and art, two irrelevant fields, meet in the hands of furniture designer Kim Markel from the United States. After leaving the environmental policy industry, Kim Markel made a fuss and made furniture in Beacon, New York. Her luminous chair has brought a new trend to the waste plastics utilization and transformation industry.
Recycling plastics made of candy-colored furniture set off a new trend in the industry
Kim Markel does not have any experience in the art or furniture manufacturing industry. Prior to her work, she worked in the environmental and public policy fields of DC, Baltimore and Rhode for four years. Markel, 31, said, "I love being in a world of art and design."
Recently, her Glow Collection debuted at the annual Architectural Digest Design Show. This collection consists of a series of quirky candy-colored chairs, tables, vases and mirrors made of recycled plastic.
Large items such as tables and chairs need to be structurally stable, so she used mixed plastic made from used glasses and plastic lunch boxes. At the same time, she also made a mirror frame with plastic bottles that were recycled many times and could not be recycled again.
Her work flow is roughly as follows: First, she made the mold with tiny pieces of plastic. In order to achieve the desired strength and transparency, each piece of furniture needs to be made from a variety of different plastics in a certain proportion. She paints the furniture with pigments, uses resin to bond the parts of the furniture, and then dries. The drying process takes about a few days, and after the furniture is removed from the mold, she also polishes and polishes it by hand.
The result of this is amazing: these finished products are slightly glowing like wax, and look like sea glass and like some kind of hard candy. Markel said that she is very satisfied with this result. She said that from the last weekend's exhibition and the reaction of everyone on the Internet, other people seem to be very satisfied, which further encouraged her. “I also want to try a lot of other materials and products that can be used – it’s a very interesting thing to do experiments,†she said. “I’m going to continue making the glow series and hope that I will have a chance to continue using it. Other waste makes new things."
