The technology developed by the University of Southern California, officially known as the Organic redux flow battery, works a bit like a fuel cell.

The research team stated that the size of the container can be freely customized, so the final size of the energy storage depends on the final size of the tank. In addition, the flow battery also has a better service life than the lithium-ion battery (and its variants).

Sri Narayan, a professor of chemistry at the University of Southern California's School of Arts and Sciences, said: "The new battery can achieve 5000 cycles of recharging, with an estimated useful life of 15 years. In contrast, lithium-ion batteries have only about 1000 cycles of life, and manufacturing costs. It is 10 times more than a flow battery."

The key to this "organic reflux cell" is the electroactive material it uses - it does not use metals or other toxic substances, but organic compounds.

Through repeated experiments, researchers have been able to develop quinones based on "oxidized organic compounds."

It is widely found in plants, fungi and bacteria, certain animals, and in photosynthesis and cell respiration. The research team believes that this technology will one day be able to achieve a "super-large" battery bank that takes into account both environmental protection and cost-effectiveness.
