China's energy storage application technology brewing breakthrough

Xia Lei, an expert of Asian Chemicals Consulting Company, believes that there is a huge business opportunity in China's energy storage application market, and the size of the energy storage market depends to a large extent on whether the benefits brought by the introduction of energy storage systems can offset or exceed costs. The State Grid expects the performance and price of the next-generation energy storage battery to have a cycle life of more than 5,000 times, a price of less than 1,500 yuan/kWh, and an efficiency of more than 80%. This is difficult to achieve with traditional high-level water storage technology.

If the energy storage system is commercially profitable, it will quickly usher in a huge market space. Xia Lei analyzed that Guodian Power had established a special agency to study how to achieve smooth access to wind power. The research result is that the energy storage capacity should be allocated to 20% to 30% of the installed capacity of wind power. If calculated by the cumulative installed capacity of domestic wind turbines at 41827 MW at the end of 2010, only one wind power sector in China's energy storage industry will have a potential market of 8365MW to 12548MW.

From a technical point of view, lithium batteries have the advantages of high energy density, long cycle life, low self-discharge rate, no memory effect, and environmental protection. As new materials for positive electrodes, negative electrodes, and separators continue to be introduced, lithium batteries for energy storage systems are beginning to become a new direction and have been used in many applications abroad. In October 2011, the world's largest 32MW battery energy storage system developed by AES Energy Storage Corporation was put into operation in West Virginia, USA, and matched with a 98MW wind power project. The company currently has 72MW of energy storage projects already under construction and under construction worldwide, and plans to develop energy storage projects totaling 500MW.

According to reports, sodium batteries and flow batteries for energy storage systems have been widely used. Japan's NGK began commercial production and supply of sodium batteries in 2002. It is used in 215 projects worldwide and totals 302 MW. The main developer of domestic sodium batteries is the Shanghai Institute of Ceramics, Chinese Academy of Sciences. Recently, the Institute and Shanghai Electric Group and Shanghai Electric Power Co., Ltd. jointly invested in the formation of a sodium battery industrialization company and settled in Shanghai Jiading Industrial Park. The industrialization goal is divided into three stages: In the first stage, the research efforts of the original sodium* pilot base will be increased to improve the performance of the single cell battery; and the second stage will be planned for the production of products with the production capacity of 5MW to 10MW. The pilot line cooperated with the national and Shanghai demonstration projects to establish a megawatt-scale demonstration power station for energy storage. The third phase was to pass through a 50MW production line and achieve industrialization goals. At present, the main supplier of liquid flow batteries in China is PuEnergy, and VRB, the leading global liquid battery manufacturer, has been acquired by it. Domestic Dalian Dalian Branch and Shanghai Shenli Company are currently also developing and manufacturing liquid flow energy storage system products.

Industry experts said that after the official results of the first national wind and solar storage demonstration project in Zhangbei, Hebei province, China are formally released, data and experience in the large-scale energy storage applications of lithium-ion batteries and flow batteries can be obtained. This will be a new energy source for China. The leap-forward development of the industry and the promotion of the emerging chemical energy storage industry are of great significance.
