Scientists have developed corn seeds that are resistant to parasitic weeds

Nairobi, April 29 (Reporter Lu Wei) Scientists at the Kenya Agricultural Research Institute and the International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center have recently developed a new type of corn seed that germinates and kills parasite weeds named Spodoptera.

Kenya’s “People’s Daily” reported on the 29th that the seeds were wrapped with herbicides. When they germinated, the seeds of Trichodium that like to invade the corn also sprouted. When the latter gradually invaded corn, they absorbed the original corn. The herbicide ingredient on the seed was then killed.

Fred Caranpi, an international corn and wheat improvement center scientist, said that Wacoal can grow wildly on barren land and it can destroy various crops, especially corn and sorghum. Relevant data show that the monopod causes a 20% to 80% drop in corn production in sub-Saharan Africa. Some corn producing regions such as Kenya, Tanzania and Ethiopia suffer the worst of their own.

According to reports, Germany's BASF has been authorized to produce this corn seed. Several seed companies in Kenya are also preparing to produce this corn seed.

The International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center was established in Mexico in 1966 and is headquartered in Mexico City. Its purpose is to promote the implementation of wheat and maize improvement programs in various countries, to cultivate high-yielding varieties, and to strengthen the research work on wheat and corn varieties.
