GM soybeans and products have been flooded

Tofu is an important dish for the people. However, the safety of tofu is also questionable. In addition to tofu, there are bean products such as bean paste, soy sauce, dried bean curd, bean sprouts, fried soybeans, and boiled soybeans. There are also potential threats. Because foreign GM soybeans have been flooding in China. In 2009, China imported 42.55 million tons of soybeans, an increase of 13.7% from 37.44 million tons in 2008. In January 2010, China imported 4.08 million tons of soybeans, an increase of 1.05 million tons from the 3.03 million tons in January 2009, an increase of 34.5%.

China's imports of soybeans mainly come from the United States, Brazil, and Argentina. In 2008, imports of soybeans from the above three countries accounted for 98.7% of total soybean imports in China and 97.6% in 2009 (decrease from Argentina’s imports in 2009 and imports from Uruguay and Canada. increase). In 2008, China imported 15.43 million tons of U.S. soybeans, accounting for 41.2% of all soybean imports. In 2009, China imported 21.809 million tons of U.S. soybeans, which accounted for 51.2% of China's total soybean imports, and accounted for sales of U.S. soybeans. 60% of the amount. In 2008, China imported 11.635 million tons of Brazilian soybeans, accounting for 31.1% of total soybean imports. In 2009, it imported 15.894 million tons of soybeans from Brazil, accounting for 37.6% of total soybean imports. In 2008, China imported 9.849 million tons of Argentine soybeans, accounting for 26.3% of total soybean imports.

The domestic soybean market has an import dependency of as high as 70%. The five giants of the international soybean industry A (ADM), B (Bonki), C (Cargill), D (Louis Daffo) and Fengyi monopolize 80% of imported soybeans in China. Its corporate crushing capacity has accounted for more than 70% of the total domestic capacity.

About half of the total soybean production in China is from Heilongjiang, but in 2009, the soybean reduction area in Heilongjiang was nearly 20%. In the same period, the soybean cultivation area in the United States hit a record high. Foreign genetically modified soybeans are gradually destroying non-genetically modified soybeans in China with low-cost dumping tactics. During the period from May to June 2010, the cost of South American soybean import duty to Hong Kong was lower than RMB 3,400/ton, which was far lower than the lowest purchase price of domestic soybeans of RMB 3,740/ton.

Non-genetically modified soybeans in Heilongjiang Province have fallen into a predicament and are facing catastrophe. The soybean oil made from non-genetically modified soybeans has rarely been seen in the market. Of the soybeans that were used to crush oil in China in 2008, only 5% of the raw materials came from domestic soybeans, and the remaining 95% were imported soybeans. The situation in 2009 may be even worse.

The problem is that genetically modified soybeans are not only used to make soybean oil, but may be used to make other soy products and may also be eaten directly. Even those who support the promotion of genetically modified staple foods have admitted that it is not safe to eat GM soybeans directly. Sadly, some businesses selling soybeans do not specify whether they are genetically modified soybeans. Many soy products do not indicate whether GM soybeans are used as raw materials. In other words, even if the product is marked with non-GM, according to the current state of market management, there is no guarantee that a counterfeit event called non-transgenic and actually transgenic will not occur.

Under the circumstance of flooding with genetically modified soybeans, to avoid the direct consumption of genetically modified soybeans, it is ridiculous to protect consumers’ right to know and choice of consumption options.
