Evonik introduces new PEEK microparticles

Conventional PEEK powders tend to penetrate air during processing, while the new PEEK microparticles VESTAKEEP® 5000 HCM increases particle packing density for efficient processing and high quality finished products.

The high-performance polymer business line of the Resource Efficiency Segment has recently developed the innovative polyetheretherketone (PEEK) microparticle VESTAKEEP® 5000 HCM. The granules enhance the sealing of custom PEEKs, providing excellent mechanical properties to meet the needs of the oil and gas industry.

Standard-sized oil and gas seals made of PEEK are typically processed using three processes: injection molding, extrusion, and thermoforming (HCM). If the product needs to be customized, the manufacturer usually chooses the thermoforming process because it requires less downstream processing than injection molding and extrusion. With the introduction of VESTAKEEP® 5000 HCM, the production of thermoforming will increase and the quality of finished products will increase.

Efficient processing technology + high quality finished products

VESTAKEEP 5000 HCM is effective in reducing or even eliminating air trapped in hot extrusion dies in the form of microparticles. Conventional PEEK powders used in thermoforming processes tend to penetrate into the air during processing, causing oxidation and black spots on the finished components. Black spots can cause additional reprocessing and can even cause serious yield losses. The bulk density of VESTAKEEP 5000 HCM microparticles has been measured to be significantly higher than the PEEK powder standard and has good mechanical properties such as elongation at break.

VESTAKEEP 5000 HCM microparticles offer new possibilities for thermoforming

Another advantage of VESTAKEEP 5000 HCM microparticles is that there is no need to additionally grind the particles into a powder. This allows the microparticulate PEEK compound to be added to the glass for material reinforcement or for hot press molding with fluoropolymer additives. These two processes are not possible with conventional PEEK powders because conventional PEEK powders require grinding and will destroy the effect of the glass or additives.
